The kiwi is a native of New Zealand which has been around for thousands of years. It is a small cousin of the great moa birds which died out after people came to live in New Zealand.
The kiwi does not fly and it has hair rather than feathers and a long snout which it uses for sucking up insects and fruit.
It lays large eggs which can be up to half of the weight of the bird.
They are endangered. They are very fast runners and are difficult to see in the bush.
